Débutante is a project that visually narrates the internal and external struggles of being caught between two cultures, exploring themes of cultural assimilation and opacity through the lens of me, a first-generation American and second-generation immigrant.
Débutante is divided into three parts: costume design, photography, and photo book. The title carries two meanings: the first has a literal connection to the word débutante, as this project marks my first grand presentation of myself to society; the second relates to the overarching theme of the garments-ball gowns, reminiscent of the elaborate balls once held to introduce young women to the world.
